Secret Lab Map Prices This page shows you the prices of each individual lab map piece. When you are getting the secret laboratory map, it is important to realise that each piece has a different value. By knowing the value, you will not be scammed by others who try to take advantage of you. Remember Neopets? It was that online virtual pet website that was really popular in the early 2000's, and it allowed you to play games, shop and even battle your 'neopets.' You might say Neopets. Upon being turned in, the Original Map will award several collectable cards, some random items with a rarity between 60 and 99, and up to 15,000 NP. You may turn in a set of 9 'Piece of a treasure map' pieces as many times as you like, and you will receive the rewards listed above each time.
The Secret Laboratory is highly sought after on Neopets; it allows for stats increases (and decreases), as well as species, gender and colour changes for your pets. This article should explain what the Lab Ray does, how likely the outcomes are, and some other perks of owning it.
If you are looking for information about the Petpet Lab Ray, please see this guide.
While we can't imagine what the Scientist was thinking when creating the Lab Ray,
at least it worked out better than Kooky's version.
Buying a Secret Laboratory Map
For a complete list of current estimated prices for the pieces, we recommend you see our Item Database. Neopets handheld. You may need to check back often though, as the price for each piece is constantly fluctuating due to supply and demand.

While the complete sets on the Trading Post may be convenient, you will likely end up overpaying by a fair bit. You can use the Shop Wizard to find some of the individual pieces, or keep checking the Trading Post for other users who are selling the pieces individually, as these should be cheaper overall.
If you choose to buy one piece at a time, be sure to move them to your Safety Deposit Box for storage to ensure they aren't affected by any Random Events.
The Finished Map
Below you can see what the completed map will look like. Once you have all nine pieces in your inventory, you can go to this page and turn them in.
Unfortunately, like other treasure maps, the pieces of the Lab Map disappear forever when you hand them in. This means there is no way to get them back if you decide you no longer want to zap your pets.
Zapping Your Pet
Once you have turned the map pieces in, you will receive unlimited access to the Lab Ray, but you are limited to one zap per account per day. You are able to zap any one of your pets on any given day, and as the Lab Ray does not award neopoints, you are allowed to complete, and use, it on multiple accounts. Do bear in mind though, that you must earn all neopoints to buy the Lab Map on your main account, and then send the pieces to your side accounts.
With the release of the Lab Ray Fortune Cookie in the NC Mall, you do have the opportunity to get some extra zaps. You can only open it on your main account, with the exception being if you have the lab ray on a side but -not- your main account.
Possible Lab Ray Outcomes
There are a number of possible outcomes when you choose to use the Lab Ray; it can decrease stats, increase stats, change your pet's appearance, or do nothing at all. You are not able to choose what it does though, as it's all random.
Despite this, overall, you have a 45% chance of getting a stat increase, a 28% chance of getting a stat decrease, a 22% chance of getting a pet appearance change, and a 5% chance of nothing happening at all. The chart below shows the percentage of each possible change. (Please note that these percentages may not be 100% accurate, because of the random nature of the Ray.)
Lose Strength | 5.1% |
Lose Levels | 5.5% |
Lose Movement | 4.9% |
Lose Defence | 4.9% |
Back to Level 1 | 7.4% |
Gain Levels | 5% |
Gain Movement | 10.6% |
Gain Defence | 6.1% |
Gain Hit Points | 14.2% |
Gain Strength | 9.2% |
Colour Change | 9% |
Species Change | 5.4% |
Gender Change | 7.6% |
No Change At All | 5.1% |
Note: The possible zap 'No Change At All' listed above is a variable statistic depending on the stats of your pet. Although we are unable to confirm it, it may be that 'No Change At All' is what the Ray resorts to if it is unable to change your pet, for example change it to an Alien Lupe, or reduce its level to -2. In general, the higher statistics your pet has, the less likely it is for 'No Change At All' to appear.
The outcome 'Back to Level 1' becomes a very low possibility if your pet's level is high, which is estimated to be at around level 20+ or 40+. In some rarer cases, your pet can still go down to level 1 from much higher than this, with no confirmed cut off that it is guaranteed to no longer be possible.
For an easy way to track your zaps, see our Lab Ray Logger.
Restrictions of The Lab Ray
There are only seven known colours the Lab Ray cannot turn your pet into: Baby, Magma, Pirate, Plushie, Quiguki, Royal, and Usuki. It also won't increase intelligence, do anything to your petpet, or decrease max hit points. It can only change the stats mentioned above.
The Lab Ray can change a pet's species into almost any species. Just like colours are restricted, species are too. As far as we can tell, the following species cannot be obtained from the ray: Draik, Krawk, and Ixi.
Lab Ray Exclusive Colours
Some colours are only available from the Lab Ray, there is no other way in Neopia to change your pet into that colour—not even a paint brush, or Fountain Faerie Quest.
These exclusive colours are:
- Burlap
- Ice
- Mosaic
- MSP
- Robot
- Sponge
There is only one exception to the above: Bori Neopets rainbow fountain guide. cannot be zapped to Ice due to them being exclusive to an old sponsor promotion. (To learn more about how Ice Bori were created see our Ice Bori guide.)
Some colours are primarily available through the Lab Ray, because no paint brush generates them. These colours are often considered Lab Ray colours, even though they are also available through Fountain Faerie Quests: Alien, Chocolate, Coconut, Custard, Garlic, Mallow, Snot, and Jelly.
Finally, the fruit and vegetable Chia colours are available through the Rainbow Fountain and Magical Chia Pops. The Mutant colour is also available from the Lab Ray, but you can also obtain it from Transmogrification Potions and Fountain Faerie Quests.
Exceptions
Technically you can get some of these colours by other very rare means.
Any colour is available through the annual Holiday Dream Neopet Giveaway, in which a very small number of lucky Neopets are gifted by TNT, one permanent species and colour change on the Day of Giving.
Neopets Original Map Of India
If you scored enough points in the Return of Dr. Sloth plot then you were able to purchase a One-Use Robotification Zappermajig which would allow you to paint your pet Robot.
The 2018 Charity Corner had a perk available allowing a pet to be zapped with exclusive Lab Ray colours.
TNT has reported that there is a very small chance of changing a Chia to Chocolate by feeding it large amounts of chocolate foods. But there have been no recorded cases of this happening so far.
Similarly feeding them a lot of garlic can potentially change their colour to Garlic. (Though it isn't an exact science and this is a rare occurrence).
Any Final Questions?
Wearables
If you zap your pet and it changes colour/species, and its current wearables no longer fit, these items will be returned to your account, you will not lose these items.
Lab Ray Access Has Disappeared?
It appears that there was a bug where people's Lab Rays would disappear. It isn't too common anymore, but if yours does disappear, contact The Neopets Team by sending a support ticket. They have installed a feature to tell support whether or not you've ever had the Lab Ray.
Battledome Challenger
The Lab Ray gives you access to a new battledome challenger, the Lab Ray Scientist. To get the Scientist as a challenger, just refresh at the 'Select a Pet' page when you go to use the lab. Since battling in the Battledome is a Neopoint-earning activity (you will receive Neopoints and items), it can only be done on your main account, even though you're allowed to unlock the Lab Ray on your side accounts. If your mis-gendered pet is on a side account, you will have to transfer him or her first.

While many of the people I knew growing up had fabulous social lives, I had one that resembled a job. I would clock in at 8 a.m., leave by 3 p.m., and that was it. You think your junior high years were rough? Gather round, y'all, and show some respect for the incredible responsibility on my prepubescent shoulders.
Spooky Map Neopets
See, instead of staying after school to go on playdates or be part of a sports team, I chose to spend my precious non-homework cluttered hours by logging onto a little website called Neopets — and going HAM. I'm not being delicate here. I was a wizard on that site. I had a shop, some bomb ass Neopets and a selection of games that increased my net-worth daily. I was the Mark Zuckerberg of fake electronic pets, and yes, it was hard work to maintain that level of swag, but I loved every single minute of it.
Clearly, I wanted to relive my former online glory days because yesterday I logged onto the website after being gone for a very long time. My stomach churned, my fingers trembled, and I started to sweat. What if Neopets was no longer the safe haven for little girls and boys who suck at making friends because they still haven't learned to use humor as a defense mechanism? My worries were laid to rest the moment I was greeted by the familial HTML coded webpage, complete with the Neopets logo I grew to love. Suddenly I was back to being a hungry 11-year-old, out to prove that my Neo-shop was the best on the block. I was back in the game. I was back on Neopet Lane, population me.
*Quick Disclaimer: As much as I tried to log into my old account I couldn't for the life of me figure out my old password. I even tried my old AOL account to see if I wrote it down somewhere. No such luck. I was able to look up all of my old info through a new account I created yesterday so it's not a total wash.
1. Checking Out My Old Profile
The first thing I did was look at my old profile. I was pleasantly surprised that I chose a very appropriate screen-name. It was a little shocking to see that I started playing in 2004 and that I've technically been on that site for 11 and a half years. Thinking back on how much has changed in that time is insane.
Bonus Points: I belonged to a Charmed guild. I almost forgot that I used to be borderline obsessed with that show.
Also — full disclosure. I only put 'music - dance' as my hobbies to look cool.
2. Checking Up On My Neopets
Obviously I had to look at what Little Dasha thought were appropriate names for her Neopet family members. Right away I was disappointed at the lack of creativity on my part.
This one was particularly sad/tear inducing. The Neopet's namesake, Ksusha, was my very best friend growing up in Russia. We talk occasionally on Instagram when I favorite pictures of her son .. because she's married now and has a family. Glad to know that I paid homage to her in the form of a magenta colored dog/fox thing.
I named this one Buddie because of my dog Buddie that died when I was four or five. Jesus. Why are all of my names so dang sentimental!?
Also — can we all ignore the fact that all of my neglected Neopets look constipated?
3. My Neopet Petpet
I totally forgot that we can give our Neopets, Petpets! That was not something that stuck with me for all of these years.
Clearly, this was my favorite Neopet. Not only did I name her after my other best friend and train her to be level 20, but I also opted to give her the best Petpet! While I won't get into the absurd Goofy/Pluto logic of the Neopet universe, I will say these little guys were adorable. I kinda wish there was a separate Petpet site. (Is this getting too meta for anyone else?)
Please ignore the name 'usherlover1'. I was very into his sensitive bad-boy imagine in the early 2000s.
4. I Had A House!
I spent money on building a fake house for my fake pet. This thing has three floors people. When I build, I build. I wonder if the property value has gone up or if Neopia experienced the financial crisis on par with our real-world one.
5. Familiar Stomping Ground
It's weird that this place has not changed AT ALL in almost 12 years. I don't know if that says the creative team behind this website gave up, or that Neopets will never reboot its original design. I loved the magic shop so much. It's all coming back to me now!
6. Traveling The Neopet Universe
In order to get from world to world and collect Neopoints, you had to click around this map. I don't remember that Death Star looking thing on the top right or the moon rock on the top left from my time on the site. Is that new or am I just totally blanking?!
7. My Knapsack
Neopets Original Map Of United States
The baked potato! The paintbrushes! The books! I remember desperately needing to get more food and entertainment for my pets because they would get moody if I didn't play with them for a day or two. I didn't know I spoiled them as much as I did. (Future parenthood skills on LOCK, guys.)
8. The Shop Wizard
Every time my pets got sick or were ~fatigued~ from kicking ass in the battle-dome I would search far and wide for potions to give them. I also remember having a shop where I profited off selling things are a higher price. I was clearly an entrepreneur, but my mom and dad didn't get it.
9. The Pound
While not as tragic as the real life animal shelters that I've been to, this fake drop off site for Neopets was super depressing. Kids were discouraged from putting their pets up for adoption. I think I adopted one from there — I think it was the Cutie41Cutie418, because I would never come up with that kind of name!!! (I hope.)
10. Hasee Bounce
Obviously I had to play some of my favorite games again. I started with the OG Neopet game called Hasee Bounce. Not only did it have amazingly annoying sound effects but it was really cute and simple to play. You just hopped up and down catching doughnuts. I blame this game for my unrealistic expectation in doughnut shops across this nation.
Sometimes you would accidentally catch the 'dung' that's flying in the air and it would set you back a little.
If you were satisfied with your score, you would submit it to get Neopoints. You could only do that three times a day for each game. SO SMART.
11. Spinning The Wheel
There were special places in each different location that would let you spin a wheel and get a price. Some were free, while others were not. I spun this one and this is what happened.
Truly lives up to the name of 'Mediocracy Wheel' . I won't lie. I dig the Neopet sass.
12. Monotony Wheel
This one was the worst! You would spin it and then wait. And wait. And wait. I decided to time how long it took to get me a prize.
Piece Of A Treasure Map Neopets
THAT'S HOW LONG IT TOOK ME, PEOPLE. How did I have the patience as a little kid to do this? The prize sucked!
Really? I get a lotto ticket? Thanks.
13. The Best Game Ever Invented.
I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but I am willing to stand by the fact that this is the most insane game concept ever created. Extreme Potato Counter is exactly what it sounds like. You sit, looking at your computer, and count how many potatoes fly across the screen. As you guess correctly and reach higher levels, the amount of potatoes increase and so do the speeds at which they fly by. I feel like the creators were reaching with this one.
14. The Bank
Let us not forget that we had a bank, complete with a bank application, built into the game. Apparently your Neopoints were not safe under your Neomattress or inside of your Neopurse, so you had to deposit them into a bank. Seeing as to the fact that I've been a patron for a very long time, I wonder if my interest compounded to anything interesting. I will also take this opportunity to say — Neopets taught me more about banking then my actual education did.
Neopets Original Map
15. I Was Totally Hussled
So I was decided to try out this last wheel to see if I can get some dope prize. I paid 500 Neopoints. I spun the wheel and this is what I got.
A measly 145 Neopoints! I lost money. I guess that's what gambling is or whatever. Lesson learned (a decade later). I will say that I do not appreciate the the fairy smugness.
This is the only time you can have a second shop, and only one of your alternate accounts can be used for this purpose. You CAN sell items for guild purposes in a clearly labeled guild account. Neopets kitchen quest.
Why are you holding up your hand? Nothing good happened. I LOST MONEY.
16. I Checked My Hopes And Dreams Into A Hotel
Since I created a new account, complete with a new Neopet — I decided to go for a new name. MyHopesAndDreams checked into a hotel so that I would never have to worry about her starving or not having any fun.
It cost me a pretty penny, but for the next 28 days she will be looked after. I feel like a rich Upper East Side woman right now. I gotta tell ya .. it feels great!
17. Battle
Finally, I readied my sweet new pet for battle. I gave her a sword and a shield and made her fight a giant clown-punching bag.
Neopets Original Treasure Map
(She lost.)
That concludes my adventure through time and space. I got to see what my kid-brain liked 11 years ago. If you have access to your old account, I suggest you try this out for yourself. It's entertaining and mildly embarrassing. I also decided to include an email I sent out to some of the people from my grade asking to help me get more Neopoints in 2005. I'd like to point out that I no longer send out instructional emails that long. Also, I had a terrible time spelling because English is my second language and I just got to America.
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Neopets 4 lyfe.
